“What you tell your Sailors and your leaders will have the weight of the anchor behind it.”

By Mr. Thomas Cieslak

The Marine Corps Cherry Point community gathered Friday, November 19 to celebrate the accomplishment and leadership of three Sailors as they achieved a milestone in their Navy careers.

Sailors, Marines and family members celebrated the promotion of Chief Petty Officer Brooks Kuhn, Chief Petty Officer Raymond Weeks and Chief Petty Officer Nicole Gacayan during a ceremony held aboard the base.
Kuhn is assigned to 2nd Marine Aircraft Wing while Weeks and Gacayan are assigned to Naval Health Clinic Cherry Point.

“The Chief’s Mess will always be there to help you,” said Retired Master Chief Nathan Whiddon, the ceremony’s guest speaker to the Chief-selects. “What you tell your Sailors and your leaders will have the weight of the anchor behind it.”

Advancement to the rank of Chief Petty Officer involves a rigorous selection process composed of formal evaluations, performance reviews and boards. Once selected, the future Chief Petty Officers undergo a period of intense mentoring and professional development prior to receiving their anchors.

“The United States Navy is putting its trust in you to be a fountain of wisdom, the expert, the trainer, the comforter, the counselor, the answer, and the example for all others to follow,” said Whiddon as he concluded his remarks. “The time has come for you to “Anchor Up.” Congratulations.”
