Walk ins, Appointments & Protocol

Diagnostic X-ray exams are done on a walk in basis.  Once a provider places an order, Patients contact the Radiology Front Desk phone at (252) 466-0250 to schedule an appointment for CT, Ultrasound or MRI.

The Radiology Department does not distribute results. Results may be obtained through the patient's provider or through the TRICARE Online Portal, within 48-72 hours of imaging.

PROTOCOL for CT and MRIs - These exams are unique in that the Radiologist must protocol the exam before they are scheduled.  Protocols are done at the end of business the day of the inquiry.  Patients are advised to call or come in the next business day to confirm whether or not we are capable of performing the exam at Naval Health Clinic Cherry Point, or if we need to send them to an outside provider.  Patients scheduled to have a CT at NHCCP are given appointment specific instructions upon scheduling their exam.

PROTOCOL for Ultrasound - Patients scheduled to have an Ultrasound at NHCCP are given appointment specific instructions upon scheduling their exam.  Ultrasounds are a very unique exam in that most of the exams require patient privacy.  Only the patient is allowed in the Ultrasound room, and with pediatric patients only one guardian is allowed with the patient.

 Computed Tomography (CT)

Computed Tomography (also known as CT or CAT scanning) uses special equipment to obtain multiple cross-sectional images of the organs and tissues. Here at Naval Health Clinic Cherry Point, we have a new 64 slice, GE Lightspeed CT machine capable of meeting and exceeding all the imaging needs of our patients. If a patient is pregnant, or could be pregnant, it is important they inform the technologist prior to any exams that emit ionizing radiation.

We perform a multitude of exams including:

  • Chest
  • Abdomen
  • Head and Neck Extremities
  • Pelvic Spine

Diagnostic Imaging (X-ray)

Radiography, or as it is most commonly known, X-ray, is the oldest and most frequently used form of medical imaging.  Radiographic imaging includes but is not limited to bones, joints, chest, gastrointestinal tract, spine, and kidneys.  Radiologic technologists are trained in radiation safety and patient safety. If a patient is pregnant, or could be pregnant, it is important they inform the technologist prior to any exams that omit ionizing radiation.

We perform a multitude of exams including:

Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI)

Magnetic Resonance imaging (MRI) is a non-invasive imaging method that uses radio waves and a powerful magnetic field rather than X-rays to produce clear and detailed images of virtually any part of the body.  Because MRI uses a powerful magnet, it is important that the technologists are aware of any metallic objects that are present in each patient’s body.  Therefore, all patients are required to complete an MRI screening form with detailed surgical and medical history prior to their exam. Here at Naval Health Clinic Cherry Point, we have a 1.5 tesla Siemens Avanto magnet capable of meeting and exceeding all the imaging needs of our patients.

We perform a multitude of exams including:

  • Chest
  • Abdomen
  • Head and Neck  Extremities

Ultrasound

Ultrasound imaging, also called ultrasound scanning or sonography, is a method of obtaining images from inside the human body through the use of sound waves. The reflected sound wave echoes are recorded and displayed as a real-time visual image. No ionizing radiation is involved in ultrasound imaging.

We perform a multitude of exams including:

  • Right Upper Quadrant
  • Thyroid
  • Abdominal Superficial Lesions
  • Pelvic/GYN Kidney/Bladder
  • Testicular/Scrotal Lower Extremity Doppler(DVT)
