The competition celebrated the 128th birthday of the Navy Hospital Corps and included events stressing the physical and mental grit of the Sailors while evaluating their skills.

Commander Carlton Bennett III retired Friday, June 12, after more than 38 years of service in the United States Navy, ending his career aboard Navy Medicine Readiness and Training Command Cherry Point. Bennett joined the Navy enlisted during a time when nearly every department on a Navy ship had a VCR and used typewriters and ended his career as a Nurse integrating advanced patient-facing health technologies to improve nursing workflow and patient safety. “Success in the Navy is a long game. You must have patience, work hard, and become exceptionally good at your job,” said Bennett during his retirement ceremony. “Then, take advantage of opportunities that allow you to shine.”

MCAS Cherry Point — Navy Cmdr. Carlton Bennett III served as an enlisted Sailor during a time when nearly every department on a Navy ship had a VCR, typewriters were used to draft official correspondence and paper letters were the only way to send correspondence home to loved ones.

Navy Lt. j.g. Nelyavier Meletiche serves as a physician assistant aboard Navy Medicine Readiness and Training Command Cherry Point. A graduate of the Medical Service Corps Interservice Procurement Program and Madison, Wisconsin, native, he credits his time as an enlisted hospital corpsman and surgical technologist with being able to better care for his patients.
